“Wedding insurance? That’s for people who take risks.” As though a wedding – any wedding – wasn’t an entire day of risk taking. One could argue that the marriage itself is a risk or a gamble, but certainly an event such as a wedding necessarily involves a degree of risk since so many people, services and aspects all need to come together in clockwork perfection.

From the photographer to the caterers, the transport to the Best Man not forgetting where he put the rings for safe keeping, your wedding is about as far out of your hands as the moon when it comes to the day itself.

One of those risks is the food – hardly given much thought other than when you choose the menu for the wedding reception and perhaps have a casual say in the kind of buffet for the evening. But what about the night before? That celebratory curry, or the lavish restaurant meal for the wedding party?

Every time you eat out you take a risk – will the food be all right, or will you manage to pick up a bug? Food poisoning can be incredibly debilitating, and the symptoms are swift. There really isn’t anything you can do either, and if you contract food poisoning, or any other illness, the day before your wedding, what will you do?

Other than walking up the aisle carrying a bucket, you may need to postpone the whole thing, just because of a bit of lobster or a dubious fish (and we’re not talking about the prospective mother-in-law).

At exactly the time you need to be fit and well, couples often celebrate by eating extravagantly, and sampling new or luxury fayre. But don’t forget, every single service provider also needs to avoid illness or food poisoning in order for your gamble to pay off.

The cost of a wedding insurance policy is only about the same as a nice meal out – and will definitely help you feel a little better if the duck’s off.
