According to the results of a study published today, nearly half of all Britons want to lose weight before their big day.

The study, carried out by wedding insurance provider Greenbee, revealed that 40% of Britons want to slim down, losing on average 8lb (3.65kg) in weight. 12% hope to lose a minimum of 2 stone (13kg).

Women appear to be under the greatest pressure, wanting to lose twice as much weight as men – 11lb (4.58kg) on average compared with 5lb (2.25kg).  People in Scotland are apparently the most image-conscious with nearly 20% wanting to lose more than 2 stone.

Those living in London and south-east England appear to be the most relaxed about lifestyle changes though, starting their wedding preparations on average just over six months in advance.

John Brady, commercial director at Greenbee, said: “Looking good on one of the most important days of your life is understandably very important. However while losing the pounds in weight may be a key aim for many brides and grooms-to-be, looking after the pounds in your pockets and protecting your big day with wedding insurance should also be a key priority.”

Wedding insurance is something that many couples overlook or didn’t even know existed. Whilst it’s rare for anything major to go wrong on your big day, small things like ripped suits often occur and for a small premium a good wedding insurance policy can ensure you’re not left out of pocket.

ICM Research consulted 2,052 adults for the study between January 15 and 17. Greenbee Wedding Insurance is part of the John Lewis Partnership.
