One of the questions often asked about wedding insurance abroad is whether travel insurance is still needed as a separate policy. Certainly wedding insurance, abroad or at home, is absolutely vital. With the average wedding now costing £21,000 and with approximately 50,000 weddings every year being cancelled due to last minute problems, (the weather, illness, accident and such like), having wedding insurance is essential unless you’ve just won the lottery and are looking for a way to get that blasted bank balance back down into meaningful figures.

But what about wedding insurance abroad? Is that so different that you’ll be covered for additional things which might normally be included in your travel insurance policy? Although it is possible that there may be a microscopic overlap between the two policies, it’s unlikely. If you’re suddenly ill with food poisoning or some other rather unpleasant bug, you may need to postpone or cancel your wedding. If you’re abroad somewhere at the time, then you’ll need a wedding insurance abroad policy to cover those costs.

But what your wedding insurance abroad policy won’t cover are the medical expenses you’ll almost certainly build up. It’s easy to take our NHS for granted, but when you go abroad you need to have appropriate travel insurance to make sure you’re covered for any illness or accident, no matter how small.

Your travel insurance policy and your wedding insurance abroad policy may both come into play at the same time, for a serious illness or accident, but will cover two quite separate issues. Without one, you’re still likely to face a very unpleasant bill which isn’t going to make you feel much better. The advice, then, is very clear. If you’re having your wedding abroad, make sure you have both a suitable wedding insurance abroad policy as well as excellent travel insurance.
