Admittedly, there have been precious few wedding insurance claims for cancellations caused by solar eclipses, generally because they’re fairly predictable. However, there are many meteorological conditions which are rather less predictable, especially if you happen to live in the UK where the weather isn’t merely so unpredictable even the Met Office get it wrong most of the time, it’s a staple topic of conversation.

Over the past few weeks we’ve all heard the many tales of people being snowed in or stranded, and of the Bride who had to get to her wedding on the back of a tractor. Not long before that we had weddings being postponed because the high winds had blown roofs off venues, and trees onto vehicles and roads. Before that it was flooding which causes untold damage and destruction, stranding people and postponing a huge number of weddings.

Whenever you plan a wedding, regardless of the month and season you choose, our weather will almost always be capable of upsetting your carefully planned arrangements. From storms to power cuts, floods to snow, high winds and even tornadoes, the UK’s weather is a force to be reckoned with. But with the average wedding today costing around £21,000, is that perhaps just a little too much to reckon against?

Statistically of all of the wedding insurance claims received each year around one fifth relate to the weather, either through damage, key people being stranded or locations entirely cut off. When you consider that there are around a quarter of a million weddings in the UK each year, that means that proportionally around 50,000 weddings each year suffer as a direct result of the weather, to the extent that an insurance claim is necessary in order to afford the financial expenses which are involved in making any last minute changes to or postponements of weddings.

If you’re thinking of gambling your wedding by not taking out wedding insurance, remember the National Lottery slogan and the unpredictability of the UK’s weather… it could be you!
