Wedding insurance companies are the hardest people to shock, simply because if it’s possible, they’ve dealt with it, and if it’s impossible, they’ve probably dealt with that too.

Take the example of Helen and James’ wedding last year. It was to be the perfect wedding, and one of the first to be held at the newly built Marina Hotel, right by the water’s edge. ‘Newly built’ is perhaps a slight exaggeration – when Helen and James settled on it for their chosen venue it was still a bare patch of ground, but the architect’s drawings looked superb, and the view and location were clearly perfect.

With building schedules on track, the couple set about making all of the other arrangements. Over the coming months they watched the building work in progress, occasionally slightly surprised at the apparently gentle pace at which walls were being constructed, but assured that all would be well in time for their special day.

Except that it wasn’t. Just a week before the wedding day Helen and James had to call their wedding insurance company to reschedule their entire day for a date several months in the future. The building firm responsible for the venue were weeks behind, and Helen and James were faced with the prospect of either getting married on a building site, or postponing the wedding at a cost of over £17,000. Fortunately their wedding insurance firm happily picked up the bill, and a few weeks later everything was sorted out.

But it’s worth remembering that when it comes to planning your wedding, there are only ever two things you can rely on: your wedding insurance company, and the Best Man getting inebriated and embarrassing himself and several of the guests.
