If you’re considering taking out wedding insurance, one aspect you should take a moment to consider is liability insurance. If you look at wedding insurance comparison sites you may notice that many policies include liability insurance, which effectively means that you and your guests are covered in the event of any damage.

One example is a guest dropping a drink on the floor and damaging the carpet. In this case, your liability wedding insurance would cover the cost of cleaning. Damage by either you or one of your guests is very easily caused, yet there is no reason why you should have your special day spoiled just because one of your guests had one drink too many and managed to knock a twenty thousand pound work of art off the wall on his way to the toilet.

However, a point worth making is that whilst wedding insurance comparison sites often include liability insurance as standard, it may not actually be necessary for you to take this part of the policy out. Why is this?

If you have home insurance you may already have liability insurance yourself. Many home insurance policies either include liability insurance as standard, or offer it as an additional option. If you have liability insurance then you may well be covered for any damage caused during your wedding. Having said this, it is most unlikely that your home insurance policy will also include all of your guests whilst at the wedding, unless you happen to own the venue yourself, or have taken out a remarkably comprehensive policy!

It is therefore up to you, if you have a home insurance policy which covers you for liability, whether to spend the additional amount required on your wedding insurance to also cover all of your guests.

The difference in price is usually very small, yet for the peace of mind you gain by having the wedding insured you will be able to relax. Often it is the case that couples assume that if they are covered themselves, then if any of their guests cause any damage, it will be up to them to sort out the repair costs.

However, you may find that some venues transfer all the responsibility to you, as you booked the venue and the reception or event is yours. Clearly on your wedding day you can’t be expected to nanny every single one of your guests to ensure they don’t drop their drinks, they don’t knock pictures off walls or accidentally let off a party popper directly at the chandelier, igniting a small fire which manages to leave at least a third of the building still standing.

By taking out wedding insurance you’ll be safe in the knowledge that whatever your guests manage to get up to, you’ll be covered, unless of course it involves getting one of the bridesmaids pregnant, in which case neither your home insurance or wedding insurance will be of any help whatsoever.
